Background of the Study

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related morbidity and mortality worldwide. Early detection plays a crucial role in improving the prognosis and survival rates of colorectal cancer patients. Regular screenings, such as colonoscopy, and awareness of risk factors are fundamental to identifying the disease in its early stages. Oncology nurses, who are often the first point of contact for patients, play a key role in promoting awareness, conducting screenings, and educating patients about preventive measures. Their knowledge, expertise, and ability to recognize early signs of colorectal cancer are vital in facilitating early detection and improving patient outcomes.

University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, Oyo State, is one of Nigeria’s premier teaching hospitals, and its oncology department handles a substantial number of colorectal cancer cases. The role of oncology nurses in the early detection of colorectal cancer is underexplored in this context. This study aims to assess how well oncology nurses' knowledge impacts early detection efforts for colorectal cancer, considering factors such as their training, experience, and involvement in the screening process.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing prevalence of colorectal cancer, many cases are diagnosed at advanced stages when treatment options are limited. The lack of early detection significantly contributes to high mortality rates. While oncologists focus on treatment, oncology nurses’ role in early detection through patient education and initial screening remains understudied. At University College Hospital, Ibadan, it is unclear how the knowledge and training of oncology nurses influence early detection outcomes, which can ultimately impact patient survival and quality of life.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the knowledge of oncology nurses at University College Hospital, Ibadan, on the early detection of colorectal cancer.
  2. To investigate the role of oncology nurses in promoting early detection of colorectal cancer through patient education and screening.
  3. To assess the impact of oncology nurses' knowledge on the early detection and diagnosis of colorectal cancer.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of knowledge of oncology nurses regarding the early detection of colorectal cancer at University College Hospital, Ibadan?
  2. How do oncology nurses contribute to the early detection of colorectal cancer through patient education and screenings?
  3. What is the impact of oncology nurses’ knowledge on the timely diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer at University College Hospital?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Oncology nurses at University College Hospital, Ibadan, have a moderate to high level of knowledge regarding the early detection of colorectal cancer.
  2. Oncology nurses' knowledge significantly influences the early detection of colorectal cancer through proactive patient education and screenings.
  3. Higher levels of oncology nurses' knowledge are associated with earlier diagnosis and improved patient outcomes for colorectal cancer.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on oncology nurses at University College Hospital, Ibadan, and their role in the early detection of colorectal cancer. Limitations include the challenge of assessing the full impact of oncology nurses' actions on patient outcomes and potential biases in self-reported data.

Definitions of Terms

  • Oncology Nurses: Nurses specializing in cancer care, including screening, prevention, and patient education.
  • Early Detection: Identifying cancer in its initial stages through screenings and awareness, which significantly improves treatment outcomes.
  • Colorectal Cancer: Cancer that begins in the colon or rectum, often with symptoms like bleeding, pain, and changes in bowel habits.
